I have not had to worry about my weight most of my childhood but after having my daughter I noticed my bad diet was starting to show in the physical sense. I partook in Martial arts for a few years and got to a national competing level, although my diet was bad I was able to keep my weight down. As my life became busier with my daughter/study/living on my own etc I took up smoking as ‘stress relief’ for my busy life and was able to keep my weight down that way. I was always lethargic, had bad skin, knew I was undernourished, addicted to sugary drinks to keep me ‘UP’ at uni/work/home and knew a change had to be made. Being crowned Miss Africa Perth 2011 made me realise my job as a role model and I kicked the smoking habit but unfortunately turned to food instead.

After doing an interview I remember talking about being happiest when I was fit and healthy (back in my competing days) and how good I felt. I found it funny that everyone seemed to say oh you’re a mum there’s not time for that, or only celebs who can afford trainers can get fit and stay healthy, but I was sick and tired of being sick and tired so I made a decision to start a local bootcamp class, three weeks later I stopped going because I had no goals or aspirations to keep me going. I then made the crazy decision after seeing a youtube video of Jennifer Nicole Lee to enter a fitness competition. I did not know how I was going to do it and was starting out with 25% body fat but just knew that’s what I was going to do and come rain, hail or shine I was going to make onto that stage and be the best version of me I can be and show my little girl that you can do anything you can set your mind to.

7 weeks out into my competition prep I was injured, over worked, felt like I was getting no where, did not feel supported and decided after seeing the fitness page of Paul and June on facebook to give Paul a call. I explained my situation to this total stranger and felt at ease immediately because he not only was empathetic but was honest, supportive and offered to meet with me that weekend. Unaware that he and June were busy with their own international competition prep, Paul and June took me under their wing without hesitation, provided me with a nutritional and workout plan specific to my body type and my needs, were very supportive and constantly provided feedback. I was able to ask as many questions as often as possible and always felt supported and made it on stage for my comp!

What Paul and June have taught me not only by training or telling me but being able to watch them train and watch them work towards their fitness goals has motivated me even more to want to achieve more than I thought I could and one day take to the international stage just like them:) My journey has just begun but what I have already gotten out of my time so far is priceless!
